A Child's War- Creative Curriculum
This term the children in Year 6 will be studying World War 2 with emphasis on the effects of the children during this time. In this session the children were learning about Anderson shelters which were used during the Blitz. The children then constructed their own shelter using nets of the shapes needed.
Timeline of War Events
In our Creative Curriculum lessons we have been learning about WW2. In today's session we ordered significant events and dates throughout the war to help the children to understand the timeline of this period.
Designing Our Own Anderson Shelters
As part of our Creative Curriculum topic 'A Child's War' we designed and created our own Anderson Shelters. The children planned their design, to do this they needed to think about the materials they would need and how they would construct their shelter to ensure it was structurally sound.
Our memorable experience this half term was a trip to the Discovery Museum to enhance our learning about World War 2. During the morning session we investigated the displays in the museum, this included information about the River Tyne and Newcastle through the ages. After lunch we then were involved in a workshop which was all about WW2, we really enjoyed this as we were able to experience artefacts from this period.
Maths In Motion
This half term the children in Year 6 were involved in the 'Maths in Motion' workshop at The Word in South Shields. Mr Roberts visited our school for the first session of this event to help the children with the preparation for the workshop; the children used their knowledge of percentage and angles to work out how much fuel would be needed to get their formula 1 car around the track.
Year 6 Science Experiment
We have now begun our new topic topic called 'Blood Heart' in Year 6. As part of this topic we have been learning about our circulatory system within our bodies. After finding out about the function of the heart we then designed an experiment which proves that our pulse rate will rise during exercise. The children decided which exercise they would carry out and ensured fair testing by having rest periods between stage of their experiment.
This week in our maths lessons we have been carrying out some practical maths using measurement. After learning how to convert measures we then used our environment to find out the height or length of different objects around our classroom. We then had to convert these measurements into different units
