Reading Scheme and Phonics EYFS and KS 1
At St. Oswald’s it is our aim that pupils will develop a love of reading that lasts a lifetime. With this in mind, we teach the children from entry into Reception how to decode the written word efficiently using their phonic knowledge.
We place great importance on the teaching of phonics and use the schemes, Letters and Sounds and Bug Club. Lessons are taught daily through 20 minutes of discrete phonics sessions, from Reception and continue until the end of Year 2.
Children who need additional support to help with their reading and writing are given focused intervention work, in small groups. This support continues into Key Stage 2 if necessary.
We encourage children to read at home both to and with parents not just from the schemes but a variety of literature. Considerable emphasis is placed upon children’s use and understanding of language through writing and reading. Creativity and imagination are encouraged while at the same time handwriting, spelling and overall presentation are essential elements of the English curriculum that cross into other subjects.
We supplement this with individual home reads which are taken from The Oxford Reading Tree scheme so that we expose the children to a range of different text types, layouts, illustrations etc. These include:
In addition to this each classroom has a book corner which is stocked with a variety of books to enthuse and inspire the children and instil a love of reading into all our pupils.
