British Values is a government initiative to teach students the values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance.
The Department for Education published guidance on promoting British values in schools as of November 2014 “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
British values are one of the many reasons why we should be proud to live in Britain!
Democracy at St Oswald's
The whole school voted for their Head Boy and Head Girl for 2024-2025.
Rule of Law at St Oswald's
Year 6 visited Safety Works to understand more about different rules and laws we follow and why they are important for their own safety.
Individual Liberty at St Oswald's
My Happy Mind helps create a positive mental wellbeing culture in which children build resilience, self-esteem, and character. My Happy Mind is all based around helping children to understand how their brain works and to support them in developing positive skills and habits to be their very best selves! This scheme supports children to; be ambitious, be confident in their choices, understand and be responsible for their behaviour, speak their mind and seek support and advice.
These are all valuable skills which support the children to develop their practice of Individual Liberty.
Our School Council are nominated by their classmates. As part of their role, they are encouraged to work together and speak about their ideas for the school.
Mutual Respect at St Oswald's
We treat visitors to our school with respect and we listen carefully to what they say. We learnt about sacrifice made by soldiers and civilians during World War I and Word War II and why the poppy is an important symbol of respect.
Nursery
In Nursery we have spent a long time thinking about ourselves and our families. We noticed that all of our families are different and special! We loved finding out about our differences.
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs at St Oswald's
We found out about the Jewish festival Rosh Hashanah and developed our understanding of differences between people, countries and tradition.
