Fit for the FInish 2024

Fit for the Finish is all about encouraging more children to get active and what better way to inspire them than by drawing on the excitement and build up to the iconic Great North Run!

Mass at St. Oswald's Church

Yesterday, year six celebrated mass at our parish church to recieve the eucharist. Father Keith spoke during his homily about how the children should be the best they can be. He discussed with the children about the importance of the coming year and that we should be able to look back at our behaviour next year and know that we have tried our best to be a loving and forgiving person.

Democracy Day

As part of our British Values -Democracy Day all the children voted for positons such as head boy/girl and also important roles such as school council and Mini Vinnies. Lots of children in year six decided to apply for the role of head boy/girl and read out their speeches in the school hall infront of the whole school. After counting all the votes from all 222 children the winners are....

Olaf and Kristen!

We are sure that they will do a super job. Well done.

Newcastle Reform Synagogue

As part of our S.M.S.C. (Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural) studies, the children in year 5 and 6 went to visit the Reform Synagogue in Newcastle. Members of the community talked to us about Judaism and showed us their synagogue. The leaders talked about the religious practice held in the synagogue and in their home, the Torah scrolls and demonstrated the use of religious objects. We really enjoyed this interesting and informative outing.

Science Experiment

Today we planned and carried out a science experiment to investigate how excercise effects our pulse rate. The children decided to run for varying distance to find out how this might then raise our bpm. We checked our bpm after intervals of one minute to clearly see how our bpm rises with continuous exercise. We wrote up the experiment in our science books which included a hypothesis and a graph to show the change to our pulse during exercise.

Harvest Celebration

DT- Cooking and Nutrition

For our Cooking and Nurition topic in Dt this term, we made a curry. After researching where our ingredients would be grown and the history of our "adopted national dish" which is curry, we then made a vegan curry. The children chopped, peeled and mixed all our ingredients together to make a delicious dish.

Trip to Safety Works- Newcastle

Yesterday year six visited Safety Works in Newcastle. The centre is managed and operated by Tyne and Wear Fire Rescue Service. It provides realistic and interactive scenarios which enable practical learning in a safe and controlled environment, to raise awareness of how to stay safe. The sessions aim to make pupils aware of not taking unneccessary risks, everyday dangers and how to avoid accidents and injuries. We met representatives from The RNLI, Police/Fire service and Nexus. Topics such as peer pressure, anti-social behaviour and road safety were discussed with the children.

Class Celebration of the Word

Our year six children who planned the Class Celebration of the Word this week decided to focus on the life of John the Baptist. We listened to the Word (Matthew 3:1-11) and responded by placing a pebble in our hands and reflecting upon the scripture. To do this we held the pebble in our hand and as it warmed, it helped us to feel closer to God. As our mission this week we were reminded of the actions of John the Baptist and the children were asked how they can be the best they can be this week.

The Month of Mary- October

October is the month of Mary because it is a time when we pray the rosary to Our Lady. During this month we try to draw closer to Jesus and and Mary by reflecting on the mysteries.

Science -Electricity

The children have begun their new topic this week, which is Electricity. We discovered that to build an effective series circuit there must be no breaks. We also carried out an investigation using the electrical componets to find out what would happen to the brightness of the bulb if we keep adding more cells. The children enjoyed this very practical activity.

English - Poetry

During yesterdays English lesson we discussed how performance poets use tone, volume, actions and intonation to enhance their poems. The children were asked to practise the poem 'Windy Nights' then perform it to the class using the performance tools.

Year 6 Carol Service

This Advent season, we created a new tradition and opportunity to celebrate with our parish community. As a result, Year 6 led us in song and prayer, as we celebrated their last Christmas in Primary School in a new and significant way.

The Year 6 children led a Carol Service, at St. Oswald’s Church on Monday 9th December at 5.30pm.

Members of school and parish joined together for this special event.
