We had great fun when the weather took a turn for the worse and we had the first snowfall of 2019. We got the school's brand new sledges out!
Mental Health Week
We talked about the importance of finding time to relax and discussed mindfulness. Mindfulness is when you focus on being in the moment - not thinking about what has happened in the past or what might happen in the future. We spent time focusing on colouring in, not talking or thinking of anything other than what we were doing at that particular moment. We enjoyed it immensely and our teacher enjoyed the silence!
Hoops for Health with Newcastle Eagles
Year 5 took part in a basketball tournament with other Year 5 classes from across South Tyneside. We were visited by Calvin from the Newcastle Eagles who coached us for a number of sessions. Unfortunately we didn't proceed to the finals of the tournament but everyone commented on the good team spirit we had shown.
Throughout this term, Year 5 have been doing a great deal of work on fractions. We began by using Diennes equipment to build up a picture of what fractions of numbers looked like.
World Maths Day
This year our theme was triangles - before we completed this activity, all we were able to say about triangles is that they were 2D shapes, which had three points and that there were different types of triangles. The investigation required us to make triangles out of match sticks, identifying how many sticks were used and what types of triangles were created. We recorded our work on a table to ensure we took a systematic approach.
Afterwards... we were able to identify four different types of triangles (scalene, isosceles, equilateral and right angled) and discuss properties such as their internal angles and the fact that those angles add up to 180 degrees. We worked systematically to produce results based on our investigation.
We noticed that more triangles were produced with an odd number of sticks.
